Is Berkshire Hathaway a hedge fund?
Technically speaking Berkshire Hathaway is not a hedge fund, it is a holding company. Although Berkshire operates similarly to a hedge fund in terms of investing in stocks and other securities, it does not take performance fees based on the positive returns generated every year.
Currently, there are thousands of hedge funds operating across the world. Some of the largest hedge funds in the world include AQR Capital Management, Renaissance Technologies, Man Group plc, Bridgewater Associates, and Berkshire Hathaway.

Why are hedge fund owners so rich?
Hedge funds make money by charging a management fee and a percentage of profits. The typical fee structure is 2 and 20, meaning a 2% fee on assets under management and 20% of profits, sometimes above a high water mark. For example, let's say a hedge fund manages $1 billion in assets. It will earn $20 million in fees.

Typically, minimum investment levels reach anywhere from $100,000 to millions of dollars for the biggest hedge funds. In many cases, such steep "entry fees" are simply out of reach even for people with the financial means to qualify as accredited investors.
Goldman, which has helped launch and finance thousands of hedge funds, said almost all newcomers survive their first year but that only 62% of all funds remain in business after five years.
One critical risk is the potential for investment losses. Hedge funds often employ complex strategies, which may involve higher risk levels than traditional investments. Additionally, hedge funds may have limited liquidity, meaning investors may need more time to withdraw their investments on short notice easily.
High returns, low fees
The hedge funds, Buffett pointed out, come at a much higher cost to investors. “Even if the funds lost money for their investors during the decade, their managers could grow very rich,” he wrote in the shareholder letter.
Anyone can invest in Berkshire Hathaway if they have enough money to buy at least one Class B share (about $360 in late 2023). For comparison, hedge funds are open only to accredited investors, meaning those with a high income or net worth and who can meet the fund's minimum investment, which can be $1 million or more.
