Why is my Amazon Smart Thermostat not responding?
Check that the thermostat is connected to your Wi-Fi network. Rebooting the Wi-Fi router can also be helpful. Try removing the thermostat from your Alexa app and then reinstalling with a partial reset. See Reset Your Amazon Smart Thermostat and Keep Your HVAC Connections.
Perhaps the most common cause of a thermostat reading the wrong temperature is that it is not located in the most optimal place within your home. If your thermostat is in direct sunlight, near sources of heat or drafts, or not centrally-located within your home, it will not give an accurate temperature reading.
Nest Thermostat. If your Nest Thermostat won't turn on, the batteries could have drained or there could be a power issue. If there's a power issue, your thermostat's battery will drain and it'll turn off Wi-Fi, the display, and other features to preserve battery life.
Try replacing the batteries, then check for a blown fuse or tripped breaker in the electrical panel. If the thermostat is still unresponsive, make sure the breaker is shut off and remove the cover.
The Thermostat Is Dirty
Dirt, dust, and debris can pose problems for both electrical and mechanical components, causing your thermostat to fail. Turn off the power source and remove the thermostat's cover. Using compressed air or a small brush, clear the housing of any dust and debris.
- On your mobile device, open the Alexa app .
- Open Devices and select Thermostat .
- Under Thermostats, select your Thermostat to open its control dashboard.
- Use the dial to set the temperature you want. Select the button beneath the dial to change the mode.
Your house could be cold due to an old air filter, a faulty furnace, improper insulation, or leaky ductwork. The simple fixes, like replacing an air filter, are relatively easy to complete. However, if the heater itself needs repairs, it's best to call in a professional to take a look and determine the problem.
If you're cold even though your thermostat indicates you shouldn't be, your furnace likely isn't the problem. In most cases, it's working just fine. It's your home that needs attention. Lack of insulation, severe air leakage, and/or unbalanced ductwork are frequently to blame.
- Access the Calibration Mode. Take out your thermostat manual and check how you can enter the calibration mode. ...
- Make Adjustments. Once you are in calibration settings, press the arrow keys for temperature adjustment. ...
- Recheck Calibration.
- Overheating (or overcooling)
- Coolant leaking.
- Erratic temperature changes.
- Strange sounds.
- Heater problems.
Do smart thermostats go bad?
If you wonder if thermostats can go bad due to wiring problems, the answer is yes. You can perform a basic wiring check by removing the cover and visually inspecting it. When you see any of the following problems, it's time to call in the professionals: Visible fraying or wear of wiring.
- Thermostat Has No Power. ...
- AC or Furnace Won't Turn On. ...
- Heater or AC Won't Turn Off. ...
- Thermostat Doesn't Match Room Temperature. ...
- Thermostat Doesn't Respond. ...
- Short Cycling. ...
- Thermostat Forgets Programmed Settings.
No power: If the thermostat isn't working at all, there could be a power issue. Try checking the circuit breaker box or replacing the batteries. Bad wiring: The thermostat may be unresponsive if the wiring has gone bad. Remove the cover and check inside for loose, detached, or corroded wires.
Check the Power Source Sometimes the problem between the thermostat and your furnace is as simple as replacing the batteries. Many digital thermostats use standard batteries to power their functions. Also make sure to check there is power at the furnace as well.
Modern home thermostats tend to have about a 10-year lifespan but are usually replaced sooner due to innovations in the market. Non-programmable thermostats have become outdated and replaced by programmable (or learning) thermostats.
The method to reset your thermostat will vary depending on the model. Common methods for resetting a thermostat include installing the battery backward for five seconds, pushing a recessed reset button with a pin or paper clip, or shutting off the breaker to the thermostat for 30 seconds.
If you notice that the actual temperature of your room is at least five degrees warmer than your desired temperature and your air conditioning system doesn't kick on, you could have a bad thermostat. If you're still using a manual version, use this time to upgrade to a smart model.
Make sure all the wiring is correct, according to the Alexa app instructions, and firmly connected. Check your C-wire connection. If you need a C-wire adapter, you can purchase one separately. See Connect a C-Wire Adapter to Your Amazon Smart Thermostat.
On the Smart Thermostat, press the Up Temperature, Down Temperature, and Mode buttons together for 10 seconds, until rEs appears on the display. Press and hold the Mode button for 5 seconds, until the device resets.
Smart thermostats are hardwired just as traditional thermostats are, but you'll also need a Wi-Fi connection to make them work remotely. If your Wi-Fi goes out, you can still manually operate a smart thermostat just as you would a regular one.
Why does my house feel cold at 68?
It has to do with the relative humidity. A higher indoor relative humidity makes the 68 degree temperature feel more comfortable; a low relative humidity makes it feel chilly.
The reasons your house is cold even with the heat on could be because of poor insulation, your furnace not working properly, rooms with high ceilings, or your heating system doesn't cover the whole house. Each of these issues can prevent your home from properly heating.
The Department of Energy recommends a winter heat setting of 68 °F (20 °C), which matches up very well with the temperatures most of us are comfortable with.
“Thyroid hormone levels are one of the most thought-of causes of feeling cold or cold intolerant,” Dr. Morrissey said. Significant anemia, or low blood iron levels, can hurt a person's temperature regulation, as can a significant vitamin B deficiency. “Some people really do just have hypersensitive nerves,” Dr.
The World Health Organization recommends keeping indoor temperatures between 64 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit for healthy people. The minimum temperature should be kept above 68 degrees Fahrenheit to protect the very young, the elderly, or people with health problems.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends indoor temperatures of at least 64°F (you can drop that down to 62°F at night if you're really looking to save on your heating bill). But if you have infants, sick or elderly people in your household, then it's recommended that you keep the thermostat set at 70°F.
You can check your thermostat's calibration with a room thermometer. Place the thermometer a few inches away from your thermostat. Allow it to take a reading. If it's more than 1 degree Fahrenheit different from what your thermostat shows, your thermostat may not be calibrated properly.
- Step 1: Tape glass tube thermometer to wall a few inches away from thermostat. ...
- Step 2: Wait about 15 minutes for mercury to stabilize. ...
- Step 3: If variation is more than a degree, check to see if thermostat is dirty.
The Average Lifespan of a Thermostat
It's usually time for a thermostat replacement if your current model is ten years. Factors like the type, brand, and amount of use can extend or shorten the life of your thermostat. Proper installation and maintenance can also impact the lifespan of a home's thermostat.
- More expensive than manual and programmable thermostats.
- Not every smart Wi-Fi thermostat works with every heating and cooling system.
- You have to feel comfortable using tech to get the most out of these thermostats.
Do thermostats lose accuracy over time?
Thermostats can lose calibration over time from being accidentally bumped or from dirt accumulating. An improperly calibrated thermostat can cause discomfort because it's not heating your home accurately.
When low batteries eventually die, you'll see a black display screen, the thermostat will stop working and your heating or cooling units won't function. The heating and cooling system cannot respond to nonexistent temperature commands.
To check heating problems, set the system to Off in the Alexa app. Then set it to Fan mode, and listen for the system fan to turn on. After it turns on, use the app to turn on Auto mode, to switch off the fan. Then set the app mode to Heat, and set the temperature higher than the room temperature.
How do I know if a smart thermostat will work? Most smart thermostats need to connect to a continuous supply of electricity. You need to find out if your current wiring setup can supply the juice your new thermostat needs. Turn off your home's power at the breaker box and remove your current thermostat from the wall.
If the thermostat's batteries are worn out, running low on power, or corroding, they can cause your thermostat to act up. Low batteries are the most common (and easiest) issue to fix, so start there.
Ensure your furnace filters are clean: Your furnace won't start up if it does not get enough airflow. A dirty air filter can prevent airflow and prevent your furnace from starting up. Check your pilot light: If you have a gas furnace and gas supply is stopped your pilot light will go out.
Gently detach the device faceplate from the wall plate, wait a few seconds, and then reattach it. If restarting your thermostat doesn't resolve the problem, you can reset the device to its original factory settings. A factory reset erases all data on the thermostat, including HVAC configuration and device settings.
Make sure your Alexa Gadget is powered on. If you're using Alexa Skills, make sure the skill is enabled. If the skill is unresponsive, disable and re-enable the skill. Reach out to the manufacturer for further assistance.
Make sure all the wiring is correct, according to the Alexa app instructions, and firmly connected. Check your C-wire connection. If you need a C-wire adapter, you can purchase one separately. See Connect a C-Wire Adapter to Your Amazon Smart Thermostat.
A: A blinking red light near the top of your thermostat's display means that the battery charge is very low but it's being charged.
Does Amazon Smart Thermostat automatically switch between heat and cool?
By default, Alexa sets the thermostat to “auto,” which will switch on either heating or cooling, depending on what's needed. The default temperature range is set to heat to 68 degrees Fahrenheit and cool to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, but you can adjust it however you'd like.

Make sure that the microphone setting of the Amazon Alexa enabled device is set to on. On the Amazon Alexa app, change the Alexa device name that is set to the Sound Bar or Wireless Speaker to a different device name. Depending on the Alexa device name, the recognition accuracy of the Amazon.com, Inc.
Move your Alexa device closer to your router
If your virtual assistant still isn't connecting to Wi-Fi, make sure it's located within 30 feet of your wireless router. Physical barriers, like concrete or brick walls, and other electronic devices, like baby monitors and FM radios, can interfere with the signal.
As the engine heats up, the thermostat gradually opens, allowing coolant to reach the radiator. Whenever it begins to fail, the engine overheats and, if the problem is left unchecked, leads to your engine boiling over. This can lead to costly repairs.
If your thermostat is off or your thermostat is showing a blank display, try to switch it on. If the thermostat does not turn on, it could also be a case of dead batteries. Be sure to replace the batteries in the thermostat. If your thermostat still won't switch on, it could be a sign that you need a new thermostat.
It will turn the thermostat off, and in most cases, it will restore the thermostat to factory settings. If you're experiencing problems with your HVAC system, you should try using the reset button.
Look to see if the coolant is swirling/flowing immediately — that means the thermostat's stuck open. If the coolant doesn't flow after 10 minutes or so and continues to be stagnant after the temperature gauge indicates it's hot, the thermostat's likely stuck closed.
If it is not flowing, wait until your engine warms up. The coolant should warm to the right temperature and begin to flow after 10 to 20 minutes. If it does not start to flow, but the temperature gauge on your dashboard rises, your thermostat is stuck closed.
